What is Motherland?
A festival, not just a night out
Motherland Drag Fest is a full day and night of drag, cabaret and club culture built in Manchester, for Manchester. One venue, multiple stages, one enormous chosen family — from polished pageant queens to filthy alt kings, live vocalists, dancers, hosts and DJs.
It began as a simple idea: the North deserves a festival-scale platform for its drag scene, where local performers share a bill with names you already know, and where the production values match the talent. No side room, no afterthought slot — the whole building is ours.
On Saturday 5 December we take over AREA Manchester from 6PM – 3AM — and there's more to come. Big announcement Saturday 15th, 6PM.
Our mission
Pay artists properly, platform them loudly
Every performer on this bill is paid. Every performer gets a proper sound check, a proper dressing room and their name in the artwork. That is the baseline, not the perk.
We book across the whole spectrum of drag — queens, kings, things, AFAB and trans performers, disabled artists, artists of colour — because a line-up that only looks one way is not representing this city.
And we build the room to match: trained welfare stewards, a zero-tolerance policy on harassment, accessible viewing, and a door team who know what they are doing.
Who belongs here
You do. That's the whole answer
Motherland is a queer space first — trans, non-binary, lesbian, gay, bi, ace, intersex and questioning people are the heart of this room — and everyone who respects that is welcome in it.
Come alone and leave with people. Come in full drag or come in a hoodie. Come sober — there are soft drinks, quiet corners and staff who will never ask why.
What does not belong here: racism, transphobia, biphobia, ableism, fatphobia, groping, filming strangers, and anyone who thinks a drag show is a place to test their edgy material.
What to expect
Eleven hours, one building
- The main stage
- Back-to-back sets from headliners and the Manchester scene, hosted end to end. Big numbers, live vocals, reveals, the lot.
- Big announcement
- Saturday 15th, 6PM. When the main stage closes the night doesn't — you'll find out exactly what happens next then.
- Between the sets
- DJs across the night, photo moments, merch, and space to actually talk to people.
- Getting looked after
- Welfare stewards in pink, free water, accessible viewing and a cloakroom. Ask anyone in staff kit if you need something.
House rules
The commandments
- 01Respect the artists. They are working — tip them, cheer them, never touch them.
- 02Consent is the whole rulebook. Ask first, every time.
- 03No racism, no transphobia, no biphobia, no ableism, no fatphobia. You will be removed.
- 04Look after each other. If someone needs help, find a steward in pink.
- 05Film the show, not strangers. Phones down during the walk-offs.
- 06Come as you are — glamour optional, kindness mandatory.
